Empower Communities

Bambang is one of an extraordinary man who dedicated his life to the movement of environment activism in Yogyakarta. Even though, he was 74 years old, the spirit to empower communities on conserving rare plants was never dying. I meet him accidentally when starting to arrange a project of the vertical garden which will be implemented in Code Riverside. This project needed a place to growing the seeds before implemented into vertical garden. My NGO has no enough money to rent a house, at that time Mr Bambang offered his house,I thought that I was very lucky. He said that God would help me if I have intention to help others.

He told me that he has helped some communities that focus on the environmental activism, especially the youth communities, since ten years ago. "My son did not allow me to work away from home because I was old and he worried about my health condition. Living alone and did not conduct any activities almost every day was very tedious. I love to plant trees since I was a childhood because I often had been accompanied my father when he went to cornfield almost every week. More even I find it very pleasing when seeing the seeds growing. Remembering the moment when you were the childhood and sight that life it was not just about a competition or beating others feel so free as you do not have the burden in life. I would like to sacrifice and enjoy my life by planting because I love it".

Bambang hoped the younger generations are more aware toward the environmental conditions at present, he sat on the porch and resumed the conversation about the contribution of people who plant trees at home to preserve environment. Bambang also said that the number of people who have awareness toward the environmental sustainability is decreasing, this condition made him disappointed.
